Middles & Teen Regressors Module, Part 10: Iconic People Who Chose to Do Things Differently Like a Boss!

Good Afternoon Friends!

This is the very final post in the Middles series. As I sat on the couch last night wondering what the final post in this series should be, my daughter looked over and kindly reminded me that my birthday was one month away. “You’re gonna be 35, Mom!” she said grinning. Somehow when your 11 year old is telling you that you’re 35 you feel a bit… old. I’m not old. But I have to say, I’m choosing to view aging as “gaining wisdom with every passing year” as opposed to “getting old”. So, it was with that in mind that I suddenly knew what I wanted to write about in this final portion of the Middles series:

Iconic people who gave aging the middle finger!

Yes, it’s inevitable that we will all age physically. Our skin will sag a bit here and there. Our hair will soften and turn silver, white, and grey. However, our minds…. our beautiful, eclectic, kinky minds will remain ever alive…. forever young! And Thank God for that, because I never want to lose my fire and I know you don’t want to, too! I can see myself using Middle Space more and more as I begin to age. I will use that young, teenage mindset to regress when I’m 60, 70, 80, heck! maybe even 90! Hehe! I want to be that rock’in grandma who is clad in all pink with rhinestone slippers. I want to be bopping down the hallway with a cat headset on my ears even with I have a walker. I want to be uniquely different.

Which brings me to today’s post. Are you ready to meet some iconic people who lived their life outside of the box? Then, let’s dive in. 🙂

I. Iris Apfel, 96 Years Old

“If you have to be all things to all people, you end up being ‘nothin’ to nobody.′ The way I dress may be ‘different’ or ‘eccentric’ to some who feel the need to label, but that’s of no concern to me. I don’t dress to be stared at; I dress for myself. When you don’t dress like everyone else, you don’t have to think like everyone else.”- Iris Apfel

Iris Apfel is still going strong at 96 years old designing accessory pieces and clothing, something she has done her whole life. For over 40 years (1950-1992), she and her husband Carl, owned a fabric manufacturing company. And over the span of nine White House administrations they worked hard to bring the best fabric reproductions to the market, specializing in 17th, 18th, and 19th century fabrics. But Iris didn’t want to just specialize in the fabric industry. At age 90 she launched a line of cosmetics with MAC. She has her own Barbie doll (complete with her signature glasses). She has her own documentary, honoring her incredible and eclectic life. She is a formidable woman who has chosen to pave her own way, and dress fabulously in her own styles doing so.

II. Elizabeth Hurley, 54 years old

Being English, I always laugh at anything that has to do with the lavatory or bottoms. -Elizabeth Hurley

This English mum and actress is still looking absolutely stunning at the tender age of 54. She continues to wow people and defy the odds by taking pictures of herself in teeny, tiny bikinis. Though she has stated that she follows a strict healthful eating regimen and only drinks water, I’m seriously tempted to try her tricks if it gets me those killer abs! May we all celebrate our bodies so freely as Elizabeth Hurley does each and every day.

III. Kitten Kay Sera, 56 years old

“I went from scrubbing those fucking floors to sitting in that throne,” she says. “Working hard and keeping your eye on the prize, that’s everything I try to do.” – Kitten Kay Sera

Imagine that your whole home…. everything you use, wear, touch, see, etc. was…. PINK. *Fans my face* Personally, I would squeal if my entire home was pink. I don’t think my family would be too pleased lol. But I digress. Kitten is famously known as, “The Pink Lady of Hollywood” and for good reason! For the past 35 years she has only used pink items in every sector of her life. Her hair is pink. Her makeup is pink. Her entire home top to bottom is pink. She is a woman who decided that she wanted to live her life as differently and uniquely her as possible. Embrace the different, my friends. Be uniquely you!

IV. Dame Maggie Smith, 84 years old

I tend to head for things that are amusing because a lot of things aren’t happy. But you can find a funny side to practically anything! -Dame Maggie Smith

When it comes to women who I would jump to my feet and give a standing ovation…. or completely fan-girl over, Dame Maggie Smith is definitely one of them. She was Professor McGonagell in the Harry Potter movies. She was Grandma Wendy in “Hook”. She was in the “The Exotic Marigold Hotel” (I. and II.) movies. She is dowager countess in “Downton Abbey”. She is an incredible actress, but it’s her no-nonsense attitude that I love the most. She ages gracefully and once said on channel 4 when asked if she uses social media: “Why would I do that? That would mean people can find me”. I laughed hard at that one. Yes, I hope that as I age even as a Little, that I always have spunk and spirit like her!

V. Lady Gaga, 33 years old

If we don’t stand up for what we believe in, if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.’ “- Lady Gaga

Known as “Mama Monster” Lady Gaga has always been known for being different in the entertainment industry. “Born This Way” is one of her best songs and a power anthem for being different. She has proven time and time again to try daring things all in the name of art. I remember when she famously wore a meat dress in protest of the U.S. governments “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and was a statement against the governmental restrictions placed on the rights of gay soldiers. I have a feeling that Lady Gaga will always be a woman to march to her own drum. 🙂

VI. Jonathan Van Ness, 32 years old

“When people say, ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,’ it’s not true, because you can reinvent yourself and learn new things whenever you want.” — Jonathan Van Ness

Talk about a man who marches to his own beat, the hair and style expert of Netflix’s “Queer Eye” show certainly knows how to look chic and fabulous all at the same time! Coming from rural Illinois where he was bullied all the time for being openly gay, JVN has taken his platform and popularity to highlight issues close to his heart. I love that he is very outspoken about politics and even does a weekly podcast discussing news highlights from his point of view. You can’t watch him and not smile. I know I do. 😀

Alright my friends, I hope you enjoyed this post of iconic people who are aging like the badasses that they are! If you enjoyed it, hit that like button and let me know. Smash that follow button if you’re new around here. And I will see you back here for the next topic!

Much love,

~Kitten/Punkin xx
