Good Evening Friends!
When I was little my family would always travel to New York to see my extended relatives. My grandmother was my favorite person in the world to go visit. She is a mild-mannered redhead with a heart of pure gold. Sitting at her kitchen table, I would look around her home and grin from ear to ear. Everything she had was clad in dairy cows! She had cow salt and pepper shakers. Her wall clock had a cow on it. Even her wallpaper was decorated in cows! (Truthfully, I still have no idea why my grandma loved cows so much lol). But I remember loving how eclectic her home was. She marched to her own beat. She made space for play.
Tonight we’re going to dive into how to design your home for play. Interior design is so much fun to get into, and there are thousands of ways to get creative with your living space regardless of how much square feet you’re working with. The goal should always be to create a space that stimulates creativity, warmth, and makes you feel at ease. Are you ready to explore this topic with me? Then, let’s dive in!
I. The Kitchen:
For many people, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where you gather, nestle, cook, and create. Already you’re being creative by the food you prepare. Why not step things up a bit more to make a space that feels whimsical and playful? One way to elevate your kitchen for creative play is to place a chalkboard on the wall. Many people also like to use chalkboard paint to make a creative writing space flush with the wall. Use this writing space as an accent wall for your kitchen! Have your friends and loved ones write messages of encouragement and love before they head home, or at a get together at your house.
As you prepare food in your kitchen, think about the dishware that you’re using. You don’t need to “break the bank” to weave creativity into your everyday utensils. You can easily pick up dishware in a variety of colors and patterns from your local thrift store. Or, you can pack your workday lunch in an adorable bento box! Opt to use a cooking pot with a kawaii face on it. You can purchase rainbow colored kitchen utensils, and make a space within your eating area that feels warm, light, comforting, and inviting.
II. The Main Room:
When we think about swings, we often think about children and playgrounds. We think about outdoor furniture that needs space and plenty of anchors to make it stable. And while all of this is true, did you know that there is a growing trend in removing traditional chairs for securely anchored indoor swings? Indoor swings are a fantastic way to have a place to rest your feet, and yet awaken your inner child. You can dangle from the floor and swing gently in your living space. You can nestle up in your own wicker nook as you draw inspiration for your latest creative endeavor. If you’re feeling a bit nervous about dangling from the ceiling, there are many furniture pieces such as rocking chairs and love-seat gliders that will make you “swing” without having to place an anchor into the wall. (Plus, it’s a great space to be held and rocked by your partner. ) 😉
Turn your living room into a den of creative energy by going against the norms of decorating. Don’t just place items in your space because it all relates to an overall “theme”. Choose your pieces wisely. Would you like to have more greenery in your home? Take your time picking out the perfect house plant! (You can give it a name too 🙂 ). Use plastic bags to weave a rug for yourself. Or place a Guardians of the Galaxy Groot potted plant on your coffee table simply because it makes you smile. Choose items in your living space that are intended to keep your mind feeling light, happy, and at ease.
III. The Bedroom:
I’ve learned along the way that the bedroom is truly sacred ground. We spend so much of our lives sleeping that having a place to truly get proper rest is vitally important. Invest in a good mattress. But beyond that, there are many ways to bring creativity into the bedroom. You can add a projector that illuminates the space with stars or water lights to make your body feel relaxed and calm before you rest. Add a touch of playfulness with fun throw pillows that evoke a giggle. Buy some inexpensive paint and paint your dresser drawers various colors. Make it a rainbow! Head to an antique shop or a thrift store and pick up an old suitcase. Sturdy, vintage suitcases make the perfect D.I.Y. project for a classy, yet functional end table!
Take the time to pick out bedding with fun themes, patterns, or colors. Play with textures that are pleasing to your eye. You can even turn your whole bed into a giant plushie if you’d like! The goal is to design a space that makes you feel playful and happy. What designs are you drawn to? (If you’ve never explored interior design, simply hop on Google or Pinterest and start searching styles! The pages are endless 🙂 ).
IV. The Bathroom:
Which brings us to the last stop in the home… the bathroom. Yes, you can get cute color-coordinating bath mats. But why stop there? Use your shower curtain as a canvas to express yourself! There are balloon curtains, and curtains that make the person showering look like they’re doing an activity. There are shower curtains with pirate ships and others with cats. So let your imagination go wild in expressing your interests! Then, step inside the shower and continue your creative flow. Choose bath products that will make you want to soak in the warm water just a few minutes longer. There are bath bombs of every scent, vegan soap that smells heavenly and is gentle on the skin. There are even organizers to color coordinate with your shower curtain. But why stop there? Pick up a set of shower markers to write sweet notes to your partner, roomie, or pet!
Then head over to the sink area and let your brain bubble with ways to turn a boring bathroom mirror into a place where you can get ready like a celebrity. Glue shells or rope to the edges of your bathroom mirror to give it a face lift. Use a toothbrush that is shaped like your favorite animated character and that makes you smile. (Fun fact: Tom Holland aka Spider-man, just recently admitted that he uses a Spider-man toothbrush at home! So if Spider-man can do it… we can too! 😉 ). But don’t stop there. Put a nightlight for the loo in your bathroom to make it glow at night. Choose towels that are warm and fluffy, or pick a towel with a hood from your favorite cartoon character. There are so many ways to make your WC a place to feel happy, creative, and clean.
