Day 18 of “Diving into Disney”: Quasimodo

Good Evening Friends!

Tonight I’m sitting here feeling quiet and thoughtful. It’s so easy to judge others in this world. We pass judgment for so many things. “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is a Disney movie that is different from the rest. Quasimodo and Esmeralda are judged for who they are, and how they look. They are tortured by a religious zealot and his army of men until they flee and seek sanctuary in the cathedral. Yet, for Quasimodo the cathedral has always been home and as such, he gives Esmeralda hospitality in a way she has never known. Tonight I’d like to discuss how we can extend hospitality to those we care about. Are you ready? Then, let’s dive in.

I. Quasimodo:

Hospitality: the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.

There I was sitting in Discord with all my Little and Dominant friends watching the movie tonight. I smiled seeing the chat room light up with gifs and comments as the movie played through. “She should be with Quasi!!” Count Howl said. “BOOOO!!!” another Little-friend chimed in. There was a universal theme in the chat room among those who hadn’t seen the movie before tonight: they wanted to see the classic Disney “happily ever after”. But this movie is a little different. Unlike Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Tangled, etc. Quasimodo doesn’t get the girl. (Spoiler, I know! But hey this movie was made in 1996 😉 ). Instead, he chooses to embrace inner peace and accept that Esmeralda loves the kind ex-soldier, Phoebus. After giving Esmeralda hospitality, love, and even saving her life… Quasimodo watches Esmeralda kiss the man she truly wants to be with. She extends friendship to Quasimodo, and love to Phoebus. We’ve all been there. The guy didn’t get the girl, but what does he get instead? Let’s dive a little bit deeper into this topic. ❤

II. Disney Bounding Outfit:

III. Little Space Activity: Make Notre Dame Paper Rose Glass Windows!

For this activity, gather 2 pieces of black construction paper, multi-colored tissue paper, and glue or contact paper. Draw a design of the Rose Window from the Notre Dame Cathedral. Then cut out the shapes and repeat on the other paper so that they match. Cut up pieces of tissue paper and stick onto the contact paper for glue in between both pieces of black construction paper (like a sandwich!). Tape up against the window and marvel at your stained glass art! 🙂

This is the actual Rose Glass Window from Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris.

IV. Personal Development Lesson:

How do we cope with disappointment when we open our hearts and minds to another person, and they don’t do that in return? How did Quasimodo find inner peace after extending hospitality and love to Esmeralda? When we think about hospitality, we must remember that the very act of helping another person is selfless. Quasimodo didn’t save Esmeralda from burning at the stake because he wanted her love in return. He saved her because his love for her was unconditional. It was pure, gentle, and strong. He loved her without seeking anything for himself. And it was through that inner strength and peace that he was able to love her enough to accept her love for Phoebus.

In our own lives, sometimes we will not get the happily ever after. We form connections that are pure, gentle, tender bonds of love. We are honest, quiet, and sometimes things work out and other times they don’t. But if the love is true then it prevails. That love is much like inner peace. It remains and it is strong. It is sure, stable, and ever-lasting. Life is mysterious and complicated. Love is even more so. But I always believe that love is worth the risk of opening your heart, like an innkeeper opens their doors, and letting others inside. It’s worth the journey to see where things go. It’s worth the moments that take your breath away and make your heart flutter. It’s worth the countless kisses and the smiles that you feel from the inside out. Love… in its purest form, is unconditional. Quasimodo didn’t lose the girl. He gained love, and that was worth it. Dream big, love hard, and stay strong, my friends. Until tomorrow. xx ❤

Don’t forget to come chat with me and all of my Little and Dominant friends on: Tomorrow we will be watching “Mulan” from 5-7 pm PST. I hope you will join us!!

I can’t wait to chat with all of you!!

Much love,

~Penny xx
